Monoplegia, Hemiplegia, Paraplegia & Quadriplegia. Paralysis is the inability to move a part of the body and comes in different types. One may become paralyzed after a spinal cord injury (SCI) or trauma. There are four types of paralysis — Monoplegia, Hemiplegia, Paraplegia and Quadriplegia.

After the first year, costs tend to go down. Spinal cord injury patients with high tetraplegia incur costs of about $184,000 annually, compared to $113,000 for people with low tetraplegia. Paraplegia costs about $69,000 each year, while incomplete motor function produces the lowest costs, of about $42,000.

Lengths of stay in the hospital acute care unit have declined from 24 days in the 1970s to 11 days currently. Rehabilitation lengths of stay have also declined from 98 days in the 1970s to 36 days currently.
